Is Your Business Visible to AI Search? GEO Guide
Is Your Business Visible to AI Search?
When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Overview to recommend a business like yours, you are either named in the answer or you are not. There is no second page to climb up from. Most businesses have never checked which side of that line they are on, and checking is the entire purpose of a GEO report.
What is GEO, and what is it not?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It is the practice of making a business findable and citable by AI systems that answer questions directly, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Google’s AI Overviews.
It is not geographic search optimization. The abbreviation causes that confusion constantly. GEO has nothing to do with local listings, map packs, or proximity. It is about whether a machine that is composing an answer decides to mention you in it.
Why does ranking on Google not guarantee you appear in AI answers?
This is the finding that turned GEO into a separate discipline. Analysis from BrightEdge and ALM Corp in early 2026 found that only around 17 percent of AI Overview citations came from pages ranking in the organic top ten, down from roughly 76 percent in mid 2024.
Ranking well and being cited used to be nearly the same problem. They have separated. A page can hold position three and never be cited, and a page nobody ranks can be quoted repeatedly.
The traffic picture shifted underneath at the same time. BrightEdge’s twelve month analysis found total search impressions rose around 49 percent after AI Overviews launched, while click throughs fell close to 30 percent. Seer Interactive measured a 61 percent organic click through decline on queries where an AI Overview appears. More people are seeing answers. Fewer are travelling to a website to find them.
Does being cited actually matter commercially?
Yes, and the gap is not small. Brands cited inside an AI Overview earn roughly 35 percent more organic clicks and 91 percent more paid clicks than the result sitting in position one beneath it.
There is a straightforward reason for that. A citation functions as a recommendation rather than as a search result. Someone who clicks through has already been told by a system they trust that you are relevant, which is a materially different starting point than being one of ten blue links.
For business to business specifically, 89 percent of B2B buyers report using generative AI as a source during self guided research, across every phase of the buying process. If that is your market, the answer engines are now upstream of your website.
What does the GEO report tell you?
Six things.
Website structural changes. Exactly what to fix in your site architecture, schema and content so AI tools can parse it and trust it.
Content prioritisation. Which pages, FAQs and topics to build first for the largest visibility gain, so you are not rewriting everything at once.
Baseline benchmarking. Where you stand today across Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, so progress is measurable rather than felt.
A technical roadmap. A clear punch list you can hand to a developer, instead of a vague instruction to improve SEO.
Competitive positioning. Who is already appearing as the recommendation in your category, and what is letting them win it.
A long term visibility strategy. GEO is a process with a starting point, not a one time fix, and the report treats it that way.
The report is customised to your brand and it gives you a clear path for your next steps whether you move forward with us or on your own. That is deliberate. A report you can only act on by hiring the people who wrote it is a sales document, not research.
What do you do with the findings?
The fixes are mostly structural rather than creative, which is good news, because structural problems are finite.
Content that answers its own question in the first paragraph rather than warming up for four hundred words. Structured data that AI crawlers can actually read, which on some website platforms is harder than it sounds, because markup injected by JavaScript after page load is frequently invisible to the crawlers that matter. Freshness, since Semrush found that pages not updated quarterly are roughly three times more likely to lose AI citations.
None of that requires more content. It requires content built differently, and it requires knowing which pages are worth rebuilding first. That is what the report is for.
Common questions
What does GEO stand for?
Generative Engine Optimization. It is the practice of making a business findable and citable by AI systems that answer questions directly, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. It is not geographic search optimization.
Why does ranking on Google not guarantee an AI citation?
Ranking and citation have separated. Analysis from BrightEdge and ALM Corp in early 2026 found only around 17 percent of AI Overview citations came from pages ranking in the organic top ten, down from roughly 76 percent in mid 2024. A page can hold position three and never be cited.
Does being cited in an AI Overview actually drive traffic?
Yes. Brands cited inside an AI Overview earn roughly 35 percent more organic clicks and 91 percent more paid clicks than the result sitting in position one beneath it. A citation reads as a recommendation rather than as a search result.
How often does content need updating to stay cited by AI tools?
At least quarterly. Semrush found that pages not updated quarterly are roughly three times more likely to lose AI citations, which makes freshness an ongoing maintenance requirement rather than a one time fix.
How is AI search visibility measured?
By running the questions your buyers actually ask through the major answer engines and recording whether your business is named, what is said about it, and which competitors appear instead.
