Which Emerging AI Technologies Actually Matter Right Now?

Gartner’s 2026 CIO and Technology Executive Survey found that only 17 percent of organizations have deployed AI agents, while more than 60 percent expect to within two years. That is the most aggressive adoption curve of any emerging technology in the survey. It is also the single most useful fact for deciding what to pay attention to, because it tells you the opportunity right now sits in deployment rather than in discovery.

Why is the gap between intent and deployment the real story?

Look at what happens when you separate what businesses say from what they run. Around 79 percent of enterprises report having adopted AI agents. Only about 11 percent have them running in production. Gartner places agentic AI at the peak of inflated expectations on its 2026 hype cycle, which is the point where attention is highest and delivery is thinnest.

Almost nothing on the list below is unavailable to you. Most of it is already sitting inside software you pay for. The competitive advantage is not in finding the newest thing. It is in being one of the small number of businesses that puts an existing thing into production and keeps it there.

That is our position, and everything below is filtered through it.

1. Agentic AI

Agents are systems that pursue a goal across several steps rather than responding to a single prompt. They can plan, call other tools, and act inside your systems within boundaries you set. Gartner projects that 40 percent of enterprise applications will embed task specific agents by the end of 2026, up from under 5 percent a year earlier.

Our view: the constraint is almost never agent capability. It is whether your processes are documented well enough for anything, human or otherwise, to follow them reliably. Businesses that cannot write down how a process works cannot delegate it to an agent. The prerequisite is operational clarity, and that is unglamorous work that nobody sells you.

2. Answer engines replacing search

ChatGPT reached roughly 900 million weekly active users by February 2026. Salesforce found that ecommerce traffic from AI chatbots and browsers doubled over the 2025 holiday season compared with 2024. People are increasingly asking a system for a recommendation rather than searching for a list and choosing from it.

Our view: this has the shortest fuse of anything on this list for a small business, because it changes how customers find you and there is no gradual migration path. You are either named in the answer or you are absent from it. We wrote about what that means and how it is measured in our post on AI search visibility.

3. Small and efficient models

The cost of running a capable model has fallen sharply, and capable models now run on modest infrastructure. What used to be an enterprise budget line is now closer to a subscription.

Our view: this quietly retired the most common objection we used to hear, which was that AI was for companies with a technology budget. It is not, and it has not been for a while. The remaining barrier is knowing what to point it at, which is a strategy problem rather than a cost problem.

4. AI inside the tools you already pay for

Customer relationship platforms, email clients, spreadsheets, help desks, and scheduling tools have all shipped embedded AI features over the last two years. Most of it is included in plans businesses are already paying for.

Our view: this is the highest return and least interesting category on the list, which is exactly why it gets skipped. A meaningful number of businesses we talk to are paying for capability they have never switched on. Before you buy anything new, audit what you already own. It is the cheapest AI project available and it frequently produces the fastest result.

5. Voice and multimodal interfaces

Systems that handle speech, images, and documents in the same conversation have improved substantially, and voice in particular has crossed the threshold where it no longer sounds like a phone tree.

Our view: real and improving quickly, but still mostly a customer service and intake play rather than a general purpose one. If you handle a high volume of repetitive inbound calls, look at it now. If you do not, this is one to watch rather than to build on.

So what should you actually do?

Pick one. Put it into production. Measure it.

The data is unusually clear on this point. With roughly 79 percent of enterprises claiming adoption and around 11 percent running agents in production, simply finishing something puts you ahead of the large majority of businesses that started and stalled. The gap is not knowledge and it is not budget. It is follow through.

If you do not know which one to pick, that is a readiness question rather than a technology question, and we have a free assessment for exactly that.

Common questions

What is agentic AI?

Agentic AI describes systems that pursue a goal across multiple steps rather than responding to a single prompt. They can plan, use other tools, and take actions inside connected systems within boundaries the business sets.

Which emerging AI technology should a small business adopt first?

Usually the AI features already included in software the business pays for. It costs nothing additional, requires no new vendor, and tends to produce a measurable result fastest.

Why do so few organizations have AI agents in production?

Roughly 79 percent of enterprises report adopting agents while only about 11 percent run them in production. The gap comes from integration into real workflows, data systems and accountability structures rather than from agent capability.

Is it too late for a business to start with AI?

No. Gartner found only 17 percent of organizations had deployed AI agents as of its 2026 survey. Most of the market is still at the starting line.
