It is the practice of making a business findable and citable by AI systems that answer questions directly, including ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. It is not geographic search optimization, which is a common confusion caused by the abbreviation.

How is GEO different from SEO?

They overlap but they are no longer the same problem. Ranking well in traditional search no longer predicts whether an AI system cites a business in its answer, so the two require different work. GEO is an additional surface to compete on, not a replacement for search optimization.
